Issue 004

Hello Tipsy Reelz Community,

Tipsy Reelz is a monthly email, sent on the first Thursday of each month.  It will include three movies from different genres, fun facts about the movies and some drinking game rules to go with them. We will also include where these movies are currently available for streaming. Please feel free to share these with your friends.

Black Christmas (1974) Fun Facts

  • Reportedly, writer Roy Moore took inspiration for the story from an actual series of murders that took place in Montreal, Quebec around the Christmas season, along with the urban legend "The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs."

  • The original title of the film's script was "Stop Me." It was director Bob Clark who came up with the title "Black Christmas," saying that he liked the irony of something dark occurring during such a festive holiday. The title is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Christmas song (and 1954 film) "White Christmas."

  • A strict rule that Clark had set for himself when it came to writing the female characters was to never objectify them sexually or give them nude scenes. He wanted the college girls to come off as real people and not disposable horror characters waiting to die.

Knives Out (2019) Fun Facts

  • Rian Johnson kept strict control over how much each actor knew about the script to make sure those playing characters in the dark were as confused as the people they were portraying.

  • Several artworks and window designs in the mansion feature the motif "memento mori," depicting scenes of everyday life populated by skeletons or skulls. The motif, which roughly translates to "remember you are mortal," was popular in the Victorian times and used to remind individuals that death comes for all people, whether rich or poor.

  • The coin Benoit Blanc flips is a 1901 US Morgan silver dollar. Since they were made of 90% silver, the government melted millions during WWI to help fund the war effort. Some are very hard to find, and depending on condition, they can fetch thousands of dollars.

Tower Heist (2011) Fun Facts

  • The original idea for the movie came from Eddie Murphy, who first pitched it to both director and producer Brett Ratner and Brian Grazer, years before the project was finally launched.

  • Producers hired a professional safe cracker, eight time world champion Jeff Sitar, to work with the props master to set up the dial lock for the safe cracking scene, and coach Gabourey Sidibe on how to use a safe cracker's listening device and work the dial to crack the safe.

  • The Thanksgiving Day Parade was completely recreated with footage from the 2009 parade along with recreated scenes of the parade with the actors involved. The studio wanted to eliminate the scene entirely, but Director Brett Ratner fought it and won because it was vital to the plot of the film.
